Serendipity!

Something really interesting happened in our class when we
were talking about butterflies. A real brown butterfly went inside our classroom!
I even caught it and showed it to the kids. Talk about serendipity!

Our Storyteller of the Day

Mrs. Michelle Aventajado, the mom of Miggy, was our guest storyteller last September 28. She read " The Very Quiet Cricket" by Eric Carle to supplement our lesson in Science about insects.

Say, "Creeeekeeeet!"

Mrs. A: "Only boy crickets chirp or make noise!"
SPBs: "Ooh!"

Mr. NiƱo Aventajado assisted during the matching game.
He made the cricket visual too. Wow! Looked like he too, had fun!
Thank you Mr and Mrs. Aventajado!

SPB Parents showing off their Galing and Talino!

Here are some pictures I managed to take of the Parents' Day. I was so excited that most of the other shots were blurry. Oh well.Magtayo tayo ng Bahay-Kubo!

Handa na ang mga mag-ama mag-"buko-relay".

Handa na rin ang mga nag-gagandahang mga nanay!

Pinoy Ako, Pinoy Tayo!

Thank you to all parents who came to the Pinoy Parents' day.
Truly, you made the day special for the kids (and teachers).
The love for family and togetherness is truly one of the Filipinos' best traits.

What a Week for the Kiddos!

It was a full week for the SPB!

They learned that a doctor is a person that cures the sick.
A doctor uses a stethoscope.

They learned another way of praying: raising their hands, closing
their eyes or looking up into the "heavens."

The Pink Rabbits and Red Raccoons in "solemn" prayer. :)

After recess, the girls practiced their "Ang Pipit" dance.

They also portrayed the Three Little Pigs and the Wolf.
Thanks to Teacher Beth for lending us the headbands!

They also had a great time picking out books in the library!
They had to look for books with short /e/ sounds!

Help with the Midterms

Here are some important reminders for your child:

  1. Kindly remind your child to listen attentively to the teacher during the 25-item exam.
  2. Answer the exam carefully to avoid skipping any items.
  3. Review answers.
Pointers for Review:
  1. Alphabet sounds (especially the distinction between "J" and "G")
  2. Sight words (such as colors, shapes, kulay, hugis)
  3. Numbers and number words (You can make "number booklets".)
  4. Katinig - Consonants, Patinig - Vowels (Sequence)
  5. Talasalitaan
  6. Gamit ng "Ako si..." at "Ako ay..."
  7. Pagsunod sa Panuto (Bilugan, Kahunan, Salungguhitan, Lagyan ng tsek at ekis, Kulayan, Iguhit)
  8. Sense of taste and touch and examples of these
The items listed above are topics in which the children have had some level of difficulty answering based on past SW's and Quizzes. Kindly check the bulletin for the complete scope and coverage of the upcoming midterm exams.

Good luck, children! You can do it! =)

Dr. Lota Gives Tips on Personal Hygiene

Dr. Margarita Lota, the mom of Miguel Lota, visited us last Friday and shared tips on how to take care our bodies.

She said that we should:

  1. Wash our hands before every meal.
  2. Take a bath everyday.
  3. Brush our teeth regularly.
  4. Eat healthy food.

She also told us a story about Prinsipe Tsikiting and sang a song with the kids. The kids really enjoyed answering Dr. Lota's questions, singing along with her song, and listening to the story.

Dr. Lota was also generous enough to prepare personal hygiene kits for each of the kids which contained : a toothbrush, soap, toothpaste and a face towel.

Thank you for everything, Dr. Lota!

Scholastic Books in Preptown.

The Scholastic book fair in the multi-purpose hall is extended up to July 27, 2007, Friday.
Please check out their book selections: books by Eric Carle, Don Freeman's "Corduroy" books, "David Gets in Trouble," and "David Goes to School" by David Shannon. It would be great if you could come yourself and pick out a book or two with your child.

Happy reading!

Mrs. De La Torre's (Healthy) Pizza

Last Friday, Mrs. Jaye De La Torre took the time out to come to school and demonstrate to the children how to make some "healthy pizza".

Her ingredients consisted of focaccia bread, pizza sauce, salami, green pepper, and cheese. She also suggested to the kids that they try having asparagus sticks instead of french fries as a healthy snack.

The children were very excited to get their slices of pizza. And as you can see, had as much fun eating as they did watching Mrs. De La Torre prepare the food for them.

Thank you so much Mrs. De La Torre!

I Like to Move it Move it!

Here are some action shots during PE time. We usually start with some warm-up and stretching. Here are some activities we've done: walking, skipping, jumping on the line, throwing, catching, passing and kicking the ball.

The kids were all especially delighted by our ball-games!

Take a deep breath.

Look at them go!

What's Going To Work? Teamwork!

Doing activities in class by group is something new to the children. They are quickly getting the hang of it though.

For instance, last Friday I asked them to color the Creation Story. Their initial question was, "Where will we work, teacher?" So I assigned vacant spaces around the classroom for each group. They enjoyed coloring together, as you can see below:

Teamwork at work.

The following Monday, I divided them into groups again, this time for Science. I gave each group several cups with different foods in them (such as M&Ms, cooked ampalaya, salt, sampalok, and calamansi). They then had to find out which food tasted sweet, salty, bitter, or sour.

You can imagine how fast those M&M's disappeared. =)

Seatwork and Quiz Schedule

Parents, take note that seatworks are usually given on Thursdays (ELA and Sci) and Fridays (Math and Fil). Friday Quizzes are done alternately, so for this FRIDAY (July 13, 2007), we will have quizzes in Math and Filipino. Last Friday (July 6, 2007), we had quizzes in ELA and Science.

For Math, the kids should study:
  1. Open and Closed Curves;
  2. Arranging by Sizes, Height and Length (ie. "Tall, Taller and Tallest"; "Small, Smaller and Smallest" and "Long, Longer and Longest.")
For Filipino, they can review:
  1. Gamit ng "Ako" ("Ako si..." at "Ako ay...");
  2. Katinig o Patinig at Titik "A a";
  3. Gamit ng "Sa Likod, Sa Harap, Sa Loob, Sa Labas, Sa Itaas, Sa Ilalim, Sa Gitna";

Kids At Play

The kids love to play in the playground--they get to interact and play with each other and with the kids from the other sections. They enjoy playing tag and pretending to be superheroes. They also walk around curious about the flowers and bugs they see.

Girls just want to have fun.

Welcome to School Year 2007-2008

It is my pleasure to be working with you this school year. I will be posting pictures, reminders, and important announcements on this blog. I hope that this will help in our mutual partnership in providing our children with the necessary guidance, support, and learning.
